Lao New Year is the biggest and most famous of the festivals in Laos, and is one of the Hid Sip Song (12 traditional festivals). The festival is also known as the water festival and it coincides with the end of the dry season and the start of the rains.
Boun Visakha Bousa Festival celebrates the birth, enlightenment and death of the Lord Buddha. It takes place on the 15th day of the sixth lunar month. Beautiful candlelit processions take place in the evening and are a fantastic site to see.
Boun Ork Pansa occurs on the full moon marking the end Buddhist Lent. Monks who were ordained for the three months of Lent can leave the temple and rejoin their families.
While not traditionally celebrated in Laos, this time of year is a very popular time for visiting the country and key destinations become very busy. Hotels and Guesthouses are often booked months in advance. Please book early to avoid disappointment.
Boun Maka Bousa Festival is held on the full moon to commemorate the speech given by the Lord Buddha to 1,250 enlightened monks who spontaneously gathered.
